I never appreciated how difficult it was to write a book! You think 'oh there's an idea that would be good', put it down on paper then think it will be a case of 'ta daaaa!'.
I didn't think that actually creating the idea in your mind and writing it would be such a tiny part of the process. You don't realise about all of the editing, re-writing, having it proof read, having people edit it, re-writing (again), editing (again) etc.
And then, when you think 'that's it now, surely?!' comes having to create the book cover, getting all the fonts just right, making sure it's all properly spaced and aligned.... And then you have to write the perfect blurb for the back of the book... Then you have to create marketing material such as banners and posters, and figure out where and how to advertise...
And that still isn't it... You have to build up suspense, choose the right day/date to release the book and make sure people know about it. And you have to have reviews ready to post right away to 'sell' it to people who might not be sure whether or not to buy it.
I'll never begrudge paying for a book again, and I'll certainly appreciate the books I read more in future. It's a long, hard process... and at the end you might not sell a single copy, or your first review might be a two word 1* one which puts people off even looking at it.
Fellow writers, I take my hat off to you xxx
